According to the latest data from Ctrip, Japan ranks as the top overseas travel destination for Chinese tourists during this China National Day holiday. During the holiday, the reporter visited a popular tourist spot in Tokyo—Ueno Zoo. Although it was a regular working day in Japan, crowds of visitors began gathering at the nearby subway station, making their way to the zoo. The star attraction drawing tourists from around the globe was a pair of Chinese panda twins.

On September 29, two Chinese giant pandas, “Bi Li” and “Xian Nu,” embarked on their journey back to China. Their final public appearance attracted thousands of Japanese citizens, who came to bid them farewell, as the pandas symbolize the deep bond between the two nations.

Although “Bi Li” and “Xian Nu” have returned to China, their  family twins , Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei, continue to be the stars of the zoo. Visitors of all ages were present—parents pushing strollers, groups of schoolchildren, and Japanese locals with professional photography equipment. Reporter also met many Chinese tourists, including Ms. Wang from Hebei, who excitedly explained, “Xian Nu and Bi Li’s first daughter is Xiang Xiang, who became a huge sensation after returning to China. I’m a huge panda fan, and I came here specifically to visit Xiang Xiang’s family in Tokyo!”

Among the crowd were tourists of various nationalities and backgrounds. James, a visitor from the UK, shared with the reporter, “This is my first time in Japan, and the first thing I did after landing was visit Ueno Zoo to see the pandas. They’re China’s national treasure, and I feel lucky to see them abroad.” Anna, a German tourist, was delighted to share that this wasn’t her first time seeing pandas. “There are Chinese pandas at the Berlin Zoo as well. They always give me a warm feeling.”

Since Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei are housed in separate zones, visitors must queue twice to see them both. The reporter spent about an hour in line, only to have one minute for watching pandas. Tourists were quick to secure the best spots, swiftly pulling out their cameras and focusing intently on the pandas. Their expressions were filled with affection, and smiles lit up their faces as they repeatedly exclaimed, “So cute!” At that moment, the pandas seemed less like animals and more like beloved celebrities adored by the masses.
