Mao Weiming, deputy secretary of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee and governor of Hunan Province, met in Changsha with a government delegation of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste on the afternoon of October 10, 2024. The delegation was led by Mateus dos Santos Tallo, secretary of State for Local Development of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste.
Zhang Jianfei, deputy director of the Standing Committee of the Hunan Provincial People's Congress; Bai Lianyang, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; and, Qu Hai, secretary-general of the provincial government, attended.

Timor-Leste is located at the intersection of Asia and Oceania, where the Pacific and Indian Oceans converge, making it an important node along the route of the Belt and Road Initiative. It covers an area of 15,000 square kilometers and has a population of 1.32 million. Timor-Leste declared its independence in 2002, becoming one of the youngest countries in the world. The Timor-Leste government delegation visiting Hunan mainly consists of heads of six provinces and districts. Commissioned by Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao, they made the inspection tour in Hunan to learn about its experiences and practices in agriculture and rural revitalization.

Governor Mao welcomed the guests and briefed them on the economic and social development of Hunan Province. He noted that Hunan and Timor-Leste are good friends standing together and helping each other in the face of adversity, and important partners involved in the Belt and Road Initiative. In recent years, the two sides have strengthened high-level exchanges, steadily advanced agricultural cooperation, and carried out in-depth cultural and tourism exchanges. Hunan's hybrid rice, fruits, and vegetables have been flourishing in Timor-Leste. He expected both sides to jointly implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state and carry out higher-quality and practical collaboration in such fields as agriculture, economy and trade, education, culture, and tourism, thereby elevating their comprehensive strategic partnership to a new level.
Secretary Tallo remarked that the delegation was deeply impressed by Hunan's strong industrial foundation, robust development trend, and hospitable people. The delegation will take this visit to Hunan as an opportunity to learn from Hunan's successful experiences and practices in agriculture, tourism, and urban construction, further enhancing the traditional friendship between the two sides and realize mutual benefit and win-win results.
