On October 9, Dr. Grethel Aguilar, director general of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), sent a congratulatory letter to Nanshan National Park for its inscription on the IUCN Green List. The IUCN Green List is a global campaign that aims to enhance and sustain the effective nature conservation results in protected and conserved areas, achieving biodiversity conservation and ensuring the sustainable development of people and nature. The recognition signified that the Nanshan National Park's effective governance and scientific management have met the requirements of the IUCN green list criteria, laying a solid foundation for the high-quality development of the park. The Nanshan National Park is located in the southwest of Hunan Province, at the intersection of Yuecheng Ridge and Xuefeng Mountain south section. The park is the birthplace and conservation area of the Dongting Lake water system in the Yangtze River Basin and the important main stream of the Xijiang River in the Pearl River Basin, with a total area of 1,303.80 square kilometers. As one of the first 10 pilot projects of a plan for the establishment of a national park system, the Nanshan National Park offers protection for endangered wildlife including forest musk deer, scaly-sided merganser, tragopan caboti, and elliot's pheasant and their habitats, as well as for Abies ziyuanensis, Chinese yew, and other rare plants and their communities. The park is a typical representative of the central subtropical forest ecosystem; a model displaying the prime period of China Danxia, a World Natural Heritage Site; and an important area of the ecological barrier in the southern hilly and mountainous areas. In recent years, the Nanshan National Park Administration has consistently adhered to the principle of prioritizing ecological protection and supporting China's efforts in building a national park system. The authority has established a unified and efficient management system and a financial guarantee mechanism, and made continuous innovations in terms of ecological protection and restoration, protection of rare and endangered species, scientific research and monitoring, natural resource asset management, and community co-construction and co-management. These efforts contribute to good results in ecological conservation and help effectively promote the unity of ecological protection, green development, and improvement of people's livelihood.
