The 2024 National Original Ecological Boatmen’s Chant Performance was held at the Hejie Street of Changde City on the evening of October 27.

More than 10 outstanding teams from different provinces such as Shanxi, Shaanxi, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Sichuan, Chongqing, and Guizhou, sang their songs with different characteristics along the bank of Chuanzi River, presenting a cultural feast for citizens and tourists.

The boatmen’s chant is a traditional folk song with a long history, and popular in areas with rivers, lakes, and seas across the country. According to the width of rivers and the speed of water flow in different regions, boatmen’s chant with different styles and melodies have been formed, full of unique regional characteristics. It is a cultural treasure of the Chinese nation and a wisdom crystallization of the working people.

The event showcased the rich diversity and profound cultural heritage of boatmen’s chant and enhanced the reputation of intangible cultural heritage represented by the boatmen’s chant.

Originating in the Lishui River basin, the Lishui boatmen’s chant has a history of over a thousand years. The Lishui boatmen’s chant performance brought by the Lixian Cultural Center quickly ignited the atmosphere of the live performance. The boatmen’s chant from the lower reaches of the Jinsha River in Yibin City of Sichuan Province has strong rhythmic movements, and 84-year-old boatman, Jiang Jingle, presented his performance and won waves of cheers. The audience felt the love and pursuit of life of boatmen, and was deeply touched by the ancient culture of boatmen’s chant.
