The Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of China (ISTIC), a national-level scientific and technological information research institute directly under the Ministry of Science and Technology, recently announced the Evaluation Report on the Innovation Capacity of National Innovative Cities 2024 . It released the innovation capacity index of national innovative cities and their rankings, and the list of China's top 100 cities in innovation capability. Changsha, Zhuzhou, Xiangtan, and Hengyang of Hunan Province made the list, with their rankings moving up compared with last year, said the Department of Science and Technology of Hunan Province.

A national innovative city is the one with strong independent innovation capability, outstanding scientific and technological support and leading strength, high level of sustainable economic and social development, and remarkable regional driving force. In 2024, the Ministry of Science and Technology conducted a comprehensive evaluation on 101 national innovative cities in China from five dimensions of innovation governance, original innovation, technological innovation, achievements transformation, and innovation drive, and 30 specific indicators. Changsha, Zhuzhou, Xiangtan, and Hengyang ranked 9th, 34th, 60th, and 80th, respectively.

The report also included a list of the country's top 100 cities in innovation capability, which was selected from 288 entry cities. Changsha, Zhuzhou, Xiangtan, and Hengyang came in 9th, 35th, 63rd, and 89th, respectively.
