On January 1, 2025, villagers were busy picking, packing, and loading citrus fruits at Bier Town in Baojing County, Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture.

Xiangxi Prefecture is situated within the Xiangxi-Western Hubei Citrus Reticulata Blanco Advantageous Industrial Belt, as designated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. In 2024, the citrus area in Xiangxi Prefecture reached more than 705,600 mu (47,040 hectares), with a total output of 514,700 tonnes and an annual output value of about 1.5 billion CNY. The citrus industry has successfully created nearly 600,000 jobs, and the citrus fruits are exported to northeast, northern, and northwest regions of China, as well as countries and regions including Russia and Southeast Asia.

The citrus planting bases are located in 606 villages of 67 towns of 8 counties and cities across the prefecture. Eight species of citrus fruits have been honored as green agricultural products by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. "Xiangxi ponkan" and "Yongshun mandarin orange" have been recognized as national agricultural geological indication (GI) products, "Luxi ponkan" has been approved as a national GI protection product, and "Liye navel orange" is a national Grade-A green food and a national GI trademark.

In order to broaden sales channels, Xiangxi Prefecture has prioritized the establishment of marketing platforms to support e-commerce and leading enterprises.

At present, citrus sales in Xiangxi Prefecture are improving, particularly with the rising sales price of ponkan. According to a spokesperson for the Xiangxi Prefecture Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the quality of citrus has been continuously improved, and the prefecture's export capacity and citrus market scale have expanded. The prefecture is home to nine registered export-oriented orchards and four registered processing factories. In 2024, the export price of ponkan nearly doubled compared to the previous year.
