Did you hear? You can get money during festivals in China! Every Chinese New Year's Eve, there's a yearly practice when children greet their elders with kowtows and wishes, and the elders, in return, give kids red envelopes with cash in them, known as "Lucky Money" . This tradition dates back to the custom of giving coins to keep demons away during the Western Han Dynasty (202 BC). People believed that children were vulnerable to evil spirits, and placing lucky money under their pillows could ward off these spirits. Thus, this tradition took shape and continued for thousands of years. Now, lucky money has become a token of blessings from elders, wishing children health and safety in the new year.
