The third day of the Chinese New Year is called the "Red Dog Day". It's said that the Red Dog is a deity of anger and misfortune. So, people usually stay at home this day. In southern China, to counteract the perceived ill effects of the "Red Mouth" or “Forbidden Mouth” (a term associated with risks of quarrels on the Red Dog), people would paste red paper strips with auspicious phrases on doors, including "Safe Travels" ,"Great Luck and Prosperity", and the like.
And guess what? It's also the day for rats to get married! People go to bed early and turn off the lights, to give rats a quiet place for their "wedding". So, on this day, staying at home might be the best choice!
