Pasting New Year paintings during the Spring Festival is a beloved tradition in Chinese culture. Originally meant to ward off evil spirits and protect the occupants of a house with the help of Door Gods, this custom has gradually evolved into a symbol of blessings and good fortune. In Hunan, there’s a distinctive form of intangible cultural heritage known as Tantou New Year Paintings, which originated from Tantou Town in Longhui County, Shaoyang. These handmade woodblock prints feature a rich variety of themes, including paintings of guardian deities for blessings, auspicious pictures with deities representing "Fortune, Prosperity, Longevity, and Happiness", and vivid depictions of classic opera stories like "Presenting the Pearl in the Garden". As the renowned writer Feng Jicai once said, "The folk art of Longhui is as rich as a perfectly-aged wine, and Tantou New Year Paintings are as bright as brilliantly-colored flowers." On the sixth day of the Chinese New Year, why not choose a Tantou New Year Painting to add some festive touches and good fortune to your home?
