The China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) recently announced the recognition of a new batch of geographical indication (GI) products. Three Hunan products made the list, namely, Yuanjiang Asparagus, Datong Lake Rice, and Wuling Liquor. This brings Hunan's total number of national-level GI products to 342.
A GI product refers to one that originates from a specific region whose quality, reputation, or other characteristics are essentially attributable to natural and cultural factors of the region, and is therefore named after its geographic origin.
The production area for Yuanjiang Asparagus covers 14 towns, farms, and neighborhoods including Nandashan Town in Yuanjiang City, Yiyang.
Datong Lake Rice is cultivated across five towns in Datong Lake District, including Heba Town and Beizhouzi Town, Yiyang.
Wuling Liquor's designated production region encompasses Deshan and Zhangmuqiao neighborhoods in Wuling District, along with Shimenqiao Town in Dingcheng District, Changde.
Hunan boasts profound historical and cultural heritage and a wealth of high-quality specialties. To date, the GI protection scope in the province spans 13 cities and one autonomous prefecture, and 111 counties, county-level cities, and districts. Seven GI products have been included in protection list under the bilateral agreement between China and the European Union (EU) on GI, while nine have been listed in CNIPA's key contact and guidance catalog for utilization and promotion. Hunan has established 31 national and provincial-level GI product protection demonstration zones. A number of dominant industrial clusters have taken shape, such as Hunan tea, porcelain, embroidery, liquor, fireworks, and camellia oil, with the annual output value of GI products approaching 100 billion CNY.
